The ICVAHCS is one of the facilities of the VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).
The Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) includes a level 1 tertiary care medical center with 83 licensed beds and nine surrounding Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is seeking an experienced Physician leader to serve as the Chief of Medicine and Head of the Primary Care and Specialty Medicine Service Line. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Chief of Medicine is an integral part of the health care system's clinical leadership.
Principle responsibilities of the position include strategic planning for the health care systems' primary care and specialty medicine programs. The incumbent will be assisted by an accomplished administrative team to oversee clinical and administrative operations. Applicants should have a demonstrated ability in teaching and directing patient care. Prior administrative experience is desirable.
This position may be a full-time position or a 7/8 appointment at the ICVAHCS with a joint paid appointment by the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
The distinguished professional must possess a MD or equivalent, be Board Certified in Internal Medicine with or without sub specialty certification, must be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine, and licensed.
The Research Program at the Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) has been active for over 50 years and has consistently been one of the top VA facilities nationwide in terms of VA and non-VA research funding. Specialized areas of research expertise include infectious diseases, immunology, transplantation, dermatology, pulmonary, cardiovascular, and diabetic disease. Other patient-focused research includes clinical trials that explore new treatments for cancer, kidney and liver diseases. In response to the needs of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans, our investigators have developed new projects to understand better ways to manage patients with traumatic brain injuries and post traumatic stress disorder. The research program maintains a strong collaboration with the Iowa City VA Research Foundation and the University of Iowa. We continue to aggressively pursue new investigators and ensure relevance to the VA mission to maintain our success. To continue the successful Research Program in the Department of Medicine, the Chief of Medicine should have an academic background and be a dynamic and capable administrator.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:
Basic Requirements :
Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Preferred
Experience: Experience as a Physician leader is preferred.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
