The Iowa City Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is categorized as a Tertiary Care Level 1 facility affiliated teaching hospital, and research center. It is classified as a VHA Complexity Level1c medical center. The facility serves a veteran population residing in 33 eastern Iowa counties, 16 western Illinois counties and one northern Missouri county. ICVAHCS has nine community based outpatient clinics throughout our coverage area.
The medical center has 83 acute care beds that are divided among medical, surgical, and psychiatric services. The medical center has eight operating rooms, a ten-bed medical/surgical intensive care unit and a 15-bed mental health acute care unit. The ICVAHCS currently employs 1,830 professionals who provide tertiary, primary and specialty care for our veterans and administrative services. ICVAHCS is one of five national VA Kidney transplant centers.
