Student Trainee (Human Resources) - Pathways Intern

Summary The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development.
The HR Intern performs work in support of special projects for the Director of Human Resources related to overall Iowa City VA Health Care System processes.
They perform moderately complex personnel support duties for assigned areas by applying a comprehensive body of VA, Federal Register, and OPM HR rules, procedures, and technical expertise in HR functional areas.
Responsibilities This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program.
The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school.
The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements.
It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion.

Major duties include but are not limited to:
Providing direct support to specialists in all functional areas of personnel management, i.
e.
, staffing, classification, management/employee relations, customer support and benefits; and Office automation support and assistance in order to research data and prepare reports, graphs, etc.
Assists specialists in inquiries on grievances, appeals, and proposed adverse actions.
Within the assigned area of responsibility, provides counseling services to employees on personnel policy, administrative regulations and employee rights and services, and any other subject involving working conditions not referred through supervisory channels.
Work Schedule:
Part-time, approximately 20 hours per week.

The intern may be considered for a noncompetitive conversion to a GS-5/6/7 Human Resources Assistant (0203) or GS-7/9/11/12 Human Resources Specialist (0201), provided that the intern completes at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program while enrolled as a full-time or part-time, degree- or certificate-seeking student.

To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.
) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.

Experience:
You must have one year of general experience.
Examples of general experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

Uses personal computers to prepare documents with complicated formatting, e.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 2 academic years of post-high school study or an Associate's Degree.
